Ion-acoustic Waves

The bursty, electrostatic fluctuations observed in the frequency range 2-5 kHz throughout the day are believed to be a mode of plasma oscillation known as ion-acoustic waves. The cause of these waves in the interplanetary medium is not fully understood. It may be seen that the waves intensify upstream of the interplanetary shock.
